Afternoon Art Lecture and Tea: Calder in Connecticut
Eric Zafran, The Susan Morse Hilles Curator of European Art at the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art and curator of the landmark 2000 exhibition Calder in Connecticut, will speak on Alexander Calder’s life and work here in Connecticut. The lecture will be followed by a tea reception and tours of the exhibition. Science Lecture Series: Forces of Nature: Explosive Volcanos
Dr. James D. Webster, Curator, Dept. of Earth and Planetary Sciences, Division of Physical Sciences,

Dr. Webster takes us on a tour of his field research at some of these explosive volcanoes including Augustine in Alaska, Vesuvius in Italy, and White Island in New Zealand. Then it’s back to his laboratory at the American Museum of Natural History to learn more. For the last 19 years, Dr. Webster has been the Curator of Mineral Deposits at the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH) in New York. He has published extensively on his research in geochemistry and experimental petrology, which has been supported by 7 National Science Foundation research grants and 3 grants to support summer college student research assistants. He also was a co-recipient of the American Geophysical Union 2002 Excellence in Geophysical Education Award for the curation of the AMNH Gottesman Hall of Planet Earth, a 10,000 square foot permanent exhibition on the materials and forces that shape our planet.
Admission to the lecture is free to Museum members and students with identification. The cost to non-members is $5 at the door. Reservations are recommended. The lectures are supported by the Marjorie Sims Lawrence Memorial Fund and Mr. and Mrs. Fred Elser.

Film Series: All About Prints (56 min.)
Third in a three-part series of films: the first two films featured the life and work of the artist Alexander Calder, and the final film is an exclusive screening of the PBS documentary film All About Prints, an in-depth exploration of the fine art medium of printmaking. Films are free with Museum admission and are followed by coffee and discussion.

Explore the exhibition Eat or Be Eaten with a gallery hunt and then create a dichromatic animal craft in the workshop. Don’t know what dichromatic means? Come find out! At 3:00 p.m. Puppeteer Deborah of Deborah Hertzberg Puppets will present her shadow puppet show Animals in Winter! A charming exploration on how animals survive the cold winter months. All activities are suitable for students of all abilities ages 5 years and up.

In order to better understand fine art prints, the Museum presents an interactive panel discussion featuring several professionals who encounter the issues and questions that arise when creating, collecting, selling and documenting fine art prints. Panelists to include:
Eli Klein – Executive Director of Eli Klein Fine Art, New York, collector and art dealer.
Roberta Waddell – Former Curator of Prints (retired), New York Public Library.
Anthony Kirk - Artistic Director/Master Printer from the Center for Contemporary Printmaking in Norwalk.
